Volcano in 2nd Grade

Volcano

In science class, second graders were learning about both quick and slow changes to the earth’s surface. After reviewing quick changes to the earth’s surface (such as earthquakes and volcanoes and landslides), students conducted an inquiry activity with a model of a volcanic eruption and discussed how the eruption changed the earth’s surface. Students also learned (and were encouraged to use) the proper terms with regards to a volcano, such as the difference between magma and lava and the sides of a volcano being called the flanks. This was a great activity to demonstrate changes to the earth’s surface.
