Shaffer Students Place First in K’Nex STEM Challenge

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Thermo Fisher Scientific and K’Nex sponsored the K’Nex STEM Challenge on March 5, 2013 at Duquesne University.  There were two competitive levels: 4th-5th grade and 6th-8th grade. The 4th and 5th grade team from Shaffer Elementary won first place!  The members of the team included Jocelyn O’Neill, Sean Bright, Aiden Meininger, Joi Burleigh and Aggie Li.  There were over 80 teams from 22 school districts in Allegheny County in the competition.   Using K’Nex equipment, the teams were asked to design a robot that would make the world a safer, healthier or cleaner place.  The winning team from Shaffer designed the E.S.R. (Endangered Species Rescuer) 3000.  It was a robot that would locate and rescue injured, endangered species and safely transport them to a rehabilitation center.  They received $150.00 towards the purchase of science equipment from Thermo Fisher Scientific. Congratulations to the E.S.R. 3000 team and the additional seven Woodland Hills teams in the competition!
