Edgewood students team with Steelers legends to install Learning Garden

The learning garden at Edgewood

Steelers legends Arthur Moats and Will Allen plus Steelers mascot Steely McBeam joined students at Edgewood Elementary STEAM Academy to install a new learning garden.

Thanks to the help from the Steelers, a group of second graders, fourth graders and fifth graders went to work on putting together the garden on Wednesday outside of the school along Maple Avenue.

The fourth and fifth graders put the five garden beds together and then filled them with fresh potting soil. Then the fifth graders helped a group of second graders do some planting, with some fresh herbs and pollinators included among the plants.

The experience was made possible thanks to a grant from Giant Eagle, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dole Packaged Foods and the Captain Planet Foundation.

The students were thrilled to work with a couple of former NFL stars and to interact with Steely McBeam, and they'll be able to benefit from the garden in multiple ways.

The Project Learning Garden program provides a context for multidisciplinary learning related to this groundbreaking initiative, ranging from nutrition and science, to social studies, math, and language arts. Students learn about food origins; engage in authentic field investigations; manipulate the environment to understand math in real-life applications; and, write across academic disciplines.
