Course description: Students in Reading Workshop will be participating in a step by step guide for accelerating maximum potential by adopting, practicing and incorporating critical reading strategies across academic content disciplines.
Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards Aligned System: The course focuses on implementation and application of the PDE Grade 7 Academic Standards and Anchors.
The Pennsylvania academic standards, the assessment anchors and eligibility content are the basis for the Reading Workshop course curriculum. These standards and anchors can be viewed at www.pde.state.pa.us
Class Materials
Textbook- Our basic textbook will be Literature; Reading with Purpose. The textbook will be kept in the classroom. The text may be taken home or outside of the classroom if a student is absent and needs to make up his/her work.
Homework- Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. Homework assignments will focus on specific reading strategies to enhance reading skills.
Grading Criteria: 12-week grading period (estimated point totals)-
Exams/Quizzes- 300 points
In- class assignments/workbook/participation -500 points
Independent Readings, Skills Tutor, workbook assignments--200 points
Units of Study:
Unit 1 – Summarizing Unit 5- Visualizing
Unit 2 –Questioning Unit 6- Inferencing
Unit 3 –Predicting Unit 7- Metacognition
Unit 4 – Text Structure
Course policies:
- Late to class: Students are expected to be in the room 3 minutes after change of class.
- Class participation: Oral reading and class discussion is encouraged, but not required; a class participation grade will be given as part of the over all grade. If a student is not following the classroom procedures he/she may lose participation points.
- Missed exams or assignments: Weekly make-up work will be given for absent students. The teacher will maintain missing worksheets and homework and it is the responsibility of the student to retrieve his/her missed assignments.
- Academic Dishonestly: Cheating and plagiarism is not permitted. Talking during a test will be considered cheating; if you have a question during a test or quiz, ask the teacher, not the students sitting next to you. The penalty for cheating is a score of zero.
