John Kiley, a sixth grader at the Woodland Hills Academy, placed second in Challenge #4 of the Fairchild Challenge at Phipps. The challenge was called “Green Cuisine: The Bake Sale Reinvented.” The students were asked to choose a traditional “bake sale” item and make a healthier version with lower calories and higher nutritional value, or make a “new concept” healthful baked good or sweet suitable for a bake sale. They had to bring the bake goods to school for the Green Cuisine Taste Testing Banquet! The participants rated each others’ entries and the school winners were submitted to Phipps for judging. John created Hubbard Squash Muffins. Along with his delicious recipe, he also had to submit an essay about why his muffins were healthier than traditional bake sale items.
He has been invited to appear on the Saturday Light Brigade radio show on Saturday March 9th, 2012 @ 10:05am. Tune into WRCT 88.3 FM to hear his interview.
Congratulations to John and the other Green Cuisine competitors. Best of luck in the final two challenges!
