Start Times 2018-2019 WHSD Building Start Times

Carol Burnett Legendary Actress Carol Burnett Rehearses with WHHS Grad at Her Show in Pittsburgh

Fourteen Point Park University sports, arts and entertainment management students met award-winning, renowned actress and comedian Carol Burnett while working as mic handlers at her Heinz Hall show May 6 in Pittsburgh.  

Keely Sapienza, a senior SAEM major from Woodland Hills High School in Pittsburgh, was one of the students who worked at the show.

Sara Shepard Pretty Little Liars Creator Rocks the WHIS

On Friday, May 4, the Woodland Hills Interaction Series hosted New York Times bestselling author Sara Shepard. Ms. Shepard is the author of many books including the Pretty Little Liars series, which was adapted for television by ABC Family. In her interaction with our students, Ms. Shepard shared her writing process and advice for becoming a writer. "Be open to everything," she said. "Ideas are everywhere." Participation for this interaction was open to all students in grades 8-12. Their enthusiasm for Ms. Shepard and her work was palpable - she graciously signed autographs and posed for pictures with her adoring fans!

TFIM Area TFIM Teams Spread Kindness

Two area high school teams of The Future is Mine (TFIM), a program from the Consortium for Public Education, sent Woodland Hills encouraging messages this week. TFIM teams from Brashear High School and Yough Senior High School created a poster for the Woodland Hills team that was covered with positive and supportive phrases. The teams also provided post-it notes with compassionate messages to be spread around the halls of Woodland Hills. Thank you to Brashear and Yough for lifting up our students!

READ A THON Read-A-Thon a Huge Success

On Wednesday, March 14, the Woodland Hills Junior Senior High School Library Media Center hosted its biannual Read-a-Thon. Teachers, administrators, community members, and students read sections of their favorite books aloud in the library to promote literacy. Over 500 students in 25 English classes were in the audience for this day long event.

Perf Arts Great Showing at PPT's Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest

Congratulations to all of our high school students that participated in the Pittsburgh Public Theatre's Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest. Over 1,200 students from more than 90 schools competed, and from those, 11th graders, Isabel Papariella and Keaura Brooks (King), were selected to participate in the finals.12th graders, Sydney Moore and Qasai Smalls, along with 9th grader, Jayson Allen, earned honorable mentions. This marks the fifth time in six years that Woodland Hills has been represented in the finals.

Tcreek Community Engagement at WHJSHS

Seniors at Woodland Hills Junior Senior High School learned their local history this week by meeting with adults in the community who had a hand in creating it.  Over three dozen community members and municipal officials came together for an oral history project set in motion by English teacher Lisa Silverman.
